The_Impact_of_Mouthwash_on_the_Oropharyngeal_Microbiota_of_Men_Who_Have_Sex_with_Men:a_Substudy_of_the_OMEGA_Trial

Publication: Mouthwash_is_a_commonly_used_product_and_has_been_proposed_as_an_alternative_intervention_to_prevent_gonorrhea_transmission._However,the_long-term_effects_of_mouthwash_on_the_oral_microbiota_are_largely_unknown._We_investigated_the_impact_of_12_weeks_of_daily_mouthwash_use_on_the_oropharyngeal_microbiota_in_a_subset_of_men_who_have_sex_with_men_who_participated_in_a_randomized_trial_comparing_the_efficacy_of_two_alcohol-free_mouthwashes_for_the_prevention_of_gonorrhea._We_characterized_the_oropharyngeal_microbiota_using_16S_rRNA_gene_sequencing_of_tonsillar_fossae_samples_collected_before_and_after_12_weeks_of_daily_use_of_Listerine_mouthwash_or_Biot¨¨ne_dry_mouth_oral_rinse._Permutational_multivariate_analysis_of_variance_(PERMANOVA)_was_used_to_assess_differences_in_oropharyngeal_microbiota_composition_following_mouthwash_use._Differential_abundance_testing_was_performed_using_ALDEx2,with_false-discovery_rate_correction._A_total_of_306_samples_from_153_men_were_analyzed_(Listerine,n_=_7_8_a_n_d_Biot¨¨ne,n_=_75)._There_was_no_difference_in_the_overall_structure_of_the_oropharyngeal_microbiota_following_Listerine_or_Biot¨¨ne_use_(PERMANOVA_P_=_0.413_and_P_=_0.331,respectively)._Although_no_bacterial_taxa_were_significantly_differentially_abundant_following_Listerine_use_,we_observed_a_small_but_significant_decrease_in_the_abundance_of_both_Streptococcus_and_Leptotrichia_following_Biot¨¨ne_use._Overall,our_findings_suggest_that_daily_use_of_antiseptic_mouthwash_has_minimal_long-term_effects_on_the_composition_of_the_oropharyngeal_microbiota.
