Determinants_and_Interactions_of_Oral_Bacterial_and_Fungal_Microbiota_in_Healthy_Chinese_Adults

Publication: Numerous_studies_have_examined_the_composition_of_and_factors_shaping_the_oral_bacterial_microbiota_in_healthy_adults;_however,similar_studies_on_the_less_dominant_yet_ecologically_and_clinically_important_fungal_microbiota_are_scarce._In_this_study,we_characterized_simultaneously_the_oral_bacterial_and_fungal_microbiomes_in_a_large_cohort_of_systemically_healthy_Chinese_adults_by_sequencing_the_bacterial_16S_rRNA_gene_and_fungal_internal_transcribed_spacer._We_showed_that_different_factors_shaped_the_oral_bacterial_and_fungal_microbiomes_in_healthy_adults._Sex_and_age_were_associated_with_the_alpha_diversity_of_the_healthy_oral_bacterial_microbiome_but_not_that_of_the_fungal_microbiome._Age_was_also_a_major_factor_affecting_the_beta_diversity_of_the_oral_bacterial_microbiome;_however,it_only_exerted_a_small_effect_on_the_oral_fungal_microbiome_when_compared_with_other_variables._After_controlling_for_age_and_sex,the_bacterial_microbiota_structure_was_most_affected_by_marital_status,recent_oral_conditions_and_oral_hygiene-related_factors,whereas_the_fungal_microbiota_structure_was_most_affected_by_education_level,fruits_and_vegetables,and_bleeding_gums._Bacterial¨Cfungal_interactions_were_limited_in_the_healthy_oral_microbiota,with_the_strongest_association_existing_between_Pseudomonas_sp._and_Rhodotorula_dairenensis._Several_bacterial_amplicon_sequence_variants_(ASVs)_belonging_to_Veillonella_atypica_and_the_genera_Leptotrichia,Streptococcus_and_Prevotella_7_and_fungal_ASVs_belonging_to_Candida_albicans_and_the_genus_Blumeria_were_revealed_as_putative_pivotal_members_of_the_healthy_oral_microbiota._Overall,our_study_has_facilitated_understanding_of_the_determining_factors_and_cross-kingdom_interactions_of_the_healthy_human_oral_microbiome.
